There’s much we know about Meghan Markle: her love for roast chicken, her penchant for neutrals and her ability to charm even the Queen. But thanks to her now defunct blog, The Tig, we also know a fair bit about what countries she held close to her heart. In a number of her Tig travel guides, the Duchess has let on some of her favourite destinations to holiday in — from Brazil to New Zealand — and proven she’s got an eye for a good spot, under-the-radar or touristy. Here, we’ve rounded up our favourite of Markle’s recommendations, so you too can holiday like a Duchess.
Malta
One of the Mediterranean’s best kept secrets, Markle has long been a fan of Malta and all it has to offer. “A dream for one who relishes culture and history set against a backdrop of the ever-so beautiful sea,” the Duchess wrote of her time on the archipelago. “Beyond being rich in history, the food and wine scene of Malta is one to write home about. While I wasn’t there in the summer, I’m told the beaches are absolutely spectacular as well — which means I will have to go back…you know, for very important research purposes.” As a member of the British commonwealth, we’re guessing Markle will be back in no time — this time with a Prince on her arm!
Paris, France
A romantic at heart, the Duchess is most definitely a fan of the world’s most romantic city, Paris. Writing about her love of the “city of lights” Markle says the hype is all for good reason. “Oh, how I love the city of lights. Yes, it has been romanticised in our minds, from cinematic shots of the Eiffel Tower to long walks on the River Seine,” she writes, before confirming French food is some of her favourite. Markle is definitely a fan. Oui oui!
New Zealand
It might not be the Duchess-approved holiday she’d get to do today, but once upon a time the actress-turned-royal was camping across New Zealand. “When my cast mate and friend, Gabriel Macht [of Suits], suggested that I camper van through New Zealand, I paused ever so slightly (thinking ‘Could I campervan? Should I campervan? Am I a campervanning girl?’) before saying yes. Which quickly evolved into a resounding yes,” she says. But the initial hesitation quickly faded, but Markle describing the country is one of the most beautiful in the world. “This would be an ode to the road trips I took with my dad, the years of being a girl scout under the helm of my mum as troop leader, and my gravitational pull towards what is said to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Turns out it really is. With a landscape that ranges from stunning lakes, welcoming wine country, glaciers, forest, farmland and beaches, New Zealand is undoubtedly spectacular.” You heard it here — New Zealand is most definitely Markle-approved.
Trancoso, Brazil
Located in the state of Bahia, Trancoso on Brazil’s east coast is one of the most remote locations in the world — but it makes for the perfect getaway. Markle writes how there’s “no better antidote to relieve the stresses of the daily grind than the feeling of sand between your toes and some warm sun kissing your skin” whilst holidaying in Trancoso, and we’d have to agree. Brookyln, United States
Her home country of America offers many sights, but for the Duchess of Sussex, it’s all about Williamsburg. Citing the waterside suburb in New York’s Brooklyn borough as one of her favourites, Markle writes about her favourite places to eat, drink and play. “Located just across the river from Manhattan’s Lower East Side, this neighbourhood has quickly become a destination in and of itself,” she says. Her favourite activity: bowling. “It’s not everyday you ask your friends to go out bowling in New York City,” she says, asking us to “Come try something a little different!”
Bali, Indonesia
Close to home for Australians, Bali is still something of a wonder to the rest of the world — but the magic of Indonesia’s most famous island doesn’t go unnoticed by Markle. “Known for it’s breathtaking beauty and mindfulness retreats, you will find no shortage of attractions here to keep you feeling refreshed, renewed, and grateful. To bring you the best of what this island gem has to offer,” she says. Particularly enraptured with one of her favourite destinations, Seminyak, Markle is certainly an advocate for Bali. “Bali is so much more than a cultural cornucopia; it is a world-class tourist destination offering a stark variety of landscapes, sights, and experiences for people of all interests and ages.”
