Summer’s debut is two months away, and if you’ve got your eye on a getaway, it’s prime time to set the itinerary.
U.S. News & World Report analyzed more than 700 locations — taking into consideration sightseeing options, dining, lodging and weather — to determine the 20 best summer travel destinations. The findings were based on both expert and reader opinions.
If your vacay dreams take place overseas, Europe is heavily favored. In the overall list, Paris and Florence snagged the No. 1 and 2 spots respectively, followed by Boston — known for its history and baseball — Dublin and Seaside, Ore.
The Massachusetts city also earned the No. 1 spot on the U.S. list. Seaside, Ore., Steamboat Springs, Colo., Nashville, Tenn., and Portland, Ore., round out the top five.
For a getaway that’s easy on the wallet but big on adventure, the Grand Canyon ranked No. 1 for cheap summer destinations. Williamsburg, Va., (where great food and nature meet historic landmarks) came next, followed by warm and sunny Fort Myers, Fla.
The last major category, focused on family-friendly locations, included the Outer Banks, N.C., Destin, Fla., the Hawaiian island of Maui, and Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, S.C.
